The 2013 Bluescope Steel Illawarra Junior Surfing Titles was held last Sunday at Warilla Beach in very testing conditions to say the least, whilst most of us were tucked up on the lounge over the weekend due to the horrible weather, all the regions hottest junior surfers were taking to the onshore waves at Warilla beach trying to stake their claim to be crowned Illawarra’s Champion.
The Scarborough Boardriding Club had numerous members of its junior ranks compete across multiple divisions in the competition, with the club now boasting Illawarra Champion’s in all of the divisions, bar one.
Kylie is the mother of April Boughton, winner of U18 girls for Junior Illawarra Regional Titles. Here’s what she had to say…
“We live at Stanwell Park so it wasnt very hard for April to be involved in the surfing lifestyle. She did a few years at Helensburgh Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club where she also completed her Surf Rescue Cert. and Bronz Medallion and has been involved in numerous patrols.”
“Unlike most surfers, April didnt start surfing as soon as she could swim, but later on around the age of 12 years. April is a natural athlete and seems to be good at anything she tries her hand at. She has stuck with surfing and has progressed really well. Essential Surf and Skate at Helensburgh supports April with sponsorship. This comes in particularly handy for Mum and Dad.”
“For the last three years she has competed at the Junior Illawarra Surf Titles and has represented Illawarra at the State Titles with last year being her best result coming 5th place in the U18’s (she was still fifteen at the time) and just missing out on going to the Aussies on a wave score countback.”
“April attends Bulli High School, where she is able to do surfing for sport, and is a member of the Scarborough Boardriders Club, where she surfs with Billie Melinz winner of the U16 girls, Kalani Ball winner of the U18 Boys, Joel Wood winner of the U16 Boys, Karne Blackwell winner of the U14 Boys.”
“Unfortunately this will be April’s Last year competing at state level because she will be too old. Illawarra only had a handful of girls surfing on the weekend so it would be really good to get some more girls out there competing and to strengthen womans surfing for our region.”
