The Stanwell Park Sea Eels Winter Swimming Club was first formed in 1989 as a family oriented club made up of male, female and youth competitors, associated with both the Helensburgh Stanwell Park Surf Club and Coalcliff Surf Club, but with the home pool located at Coalcliff.
Over the years they have enjoyed annual interclub swims with the Bulli Sea Lions (who also allow female swimmers), the Austinmer Otters, the Cronulla RSL Winter Swimmers and the Cronulla Polar Bears. They also celebrate events like the ‘John “Stacky” Stacpoole’ memorial swim and the CRAM Foundation visit.
Activities on the 2013 club calendar include:
- A visit by the Cronulla RSL swimmers on Sunday 21 April
- Celebration Day for 25 years with past members attending on Sunday 05 May
- A visit by Bulli Sea Lions Sunday 02 June
- The South Coast Winter Swimming Association Championships Sunday 14 July
- The Sea Eels Championships Sunday 8 September
“We meet at 9am on Sunday mornings at Coalcliff pool.” says Karl Weber, “To participate all you have to do is be capable of swimming 50 metres unassisted, and the club is open to both female and male competitors, whether members of a surf club or not. We start at 9am for the kids and 9.30 for the adults.”
If you have ever been a member of the Sea Eels Winter Swimming club over the past 25 years, make sure you keep the 5th of May free in your diaries. The club is turning 25 this year and their silver anniversary celebrations will be marked by a special reunion swim and function back at
Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Club. All ex-members and their families are welcome.
