Wollongong City Council Lifeguards have closed Coledale and Scarborough beaches today, Wednesday 2 December, after a shark was spotted close to shore around midday.
The shark was seen by a member of the public who reported it to Lifeguards. Lifeguards immediately closed the beach and called in all swimmers and board riders.
Jet skis were used to move the shark further out to sea. The beaches remain closed at this time as a precaution and Lifeguards will continue to monitor the situation.
As a bit of an add on to this story, the shark was initially spotted north of Wombarra Reef. Lifeguards from Stanwell Park took to the water, chasing it away from their jets. They managed to get up quite close and confirm it was actually a shark.
Wombarra and Coledale beaches were both subsequently closed. Local lifeguards say they could have re-opened mid afternoon, however owing to poor weather and surf conditions they kept them closed as a precaution.
