Great live music in Thirroul tonight (November 18) when local band Shining Bird perform at Anita’s Theatre.
This is the perfect opportunity to catch these local boys before they start doing stadium shows!
Already Shining Bird is playing to packed houses in Sydney, and has just returned from their massive ‘Black Opal’ tour of Central Australia. Now they’re on the verge of taking the world by storm. There’s a third album in the works, and they’ve recently been signed by Melodic to a European tour in 2017!
What started out as two mates mucking around has quickly become one of Australia’s most promising young bands. Describing their sound as ‘experimental rock/pop’, lead singer Dane Taylor says tonight you can expect new songs tonight, as well as their hits from the bands first album ‘Leisure Coast’.
Dane grew up in the Northern Illawarra and still works his day job as an architectural draftsman at Black Gold, above Finbox in Thirroul.
When he was 20 he decided to explore his love of music so signed himself up to a Barbershop choir. “I am not ashamed to admit it,” he laughs. “I was the youngest by about 30 years, and I sang bass. I learned so much about harmonies and the composition of chords. I knew then I wanted to do something more with music.”
Dane says Shining Bird just evolved organically. He teamed up with keyboard player Russell Webster and says the songs just started forming. “We mucked around until things sounded good,” he says. “We put out an EP called ‘Shade of the Sea”, which was picked up by a load of community radio stations, so thought we’d try performing live. We grabbed a few mates and Shining Bird was born.”
Kicking things off at Yours and Owls Christmas show in 2012, the boys soon attracted interest within the industry, and before long, they’d signed a deal with Spunk Records and their first album ‘Leisure Coast’ was born.
“The whole process has been humbling,” says Dane. “We have just kept creating music, playing and building our fan base. This week our show in Newtown was sold out. The vibe was excellent and it was incredibly motivating, which is great considering we just spent 90 hours and 7500 kilometres touring together in a van!
Joining Dane in Shining Bird is Ricci Quirke, James Kates, Alistair Webster, Russell Webster, Nathan Stratton and Michael Slater on Sax. “Having the sax has really enhanced our sound,” says Dane. “Michael is classically trained and originally from Nashville. He’s a great performer and a really intuitive musician. Just don’t talk to him about the Presidential elections,” he laughs.
“Tonight is the last show of our tour so we are looking forward to playing to our home crowd, our family and our friends.”
Shining Bird will tonight be supported by local band Stay At Home Son, Wollongong’s SM Jenkins, and the beautiful singer/songwriter Noire. 7pm at Anita’s. You can buy your ticket HERE
