It’s on again!
Preparations are already underway for this year’s DP Surfboards Battle Royale.
It’s the second time Dylan Perese, the local board shaper, shopkeeper and all-round surfing identity has run the competition, which aims to draw attention to our local surfers and our local beaches!
It’s an exclusive competition, with competitors hand-picked to take to the water, all fighting for a share of a $5000 prize pool.
“Dylan invites the surfers he wants to compete,” says DP spokesman Brett Connellan. “There will be 32 in the competition. That’s 29 surfers from Cronulla down to the Victorian border, then three wildcards. So far, there are 8 invitees. They’re notified by Instagram and have just 12 hours to accept by reposting and tagging!
“We are running an Under 16 competition in conjunction with Illawarra Sports High. The winner of that will then compete with the men on the day as our first wildcard.
“The second Wildcard will be selected via online voting and can come from anywhere in Australia. And the third Wildcard will be voted by all the local board riders as the best surfer who has not been nominated already.”
The competition will beheld on October 24 somewhere between Stanwell park and Sandon Point. “It just depends which beach has the best waves on the day,” says Brett. “Last year the waves weren’t great but it brought out the best in the surfers, who still managed to put in great performances.
“This year we are hoping for amazing surf,” says Brett. “It’s such a great way to draw attention to the Northern Illawarra and the calibre of surfers we have on the NSW South Coast.”
