Divers are being brought in to complete the long-running repairs of Austinmer ocean pools.
The commercial diving contractors will help develop a new methodology to install the sea-side panels on the southern pool after years of setbacks by failed contractors and Mother Nature.
Mayor Gordon Bradbery says up until now, contractors have needed the perfect storm of low tides, seas and swells to crane into place the huge concrete panels, but the windows have been few and far between.
“To circumvent this, the team has come up with an innovative technique of using professional divers who can be in the water on the eastern side of the pool, directing the panels. It’s an exciting concept but one which needs well considered planning and precision.
“This project continues to throw up challenges. I thank the community for its ongoing patience as we work to restore these much-loved pools.”
Meantime, work has commenced on the roof-replacement at the Austinmer Surf Lifesaving Club. Contractors will spend the next month replacing the existing roof with another heritage red roof and painting the amenities block, ahead of a major refurbishment in the second half of next year.
