Thirroul Surf Life Saving Club has won the rights to host the 2018 National IRB Championships.
The event will bring more than 2500 people to the Northern Illawarra next July, as teams from all over Australia and their support crews gather for the event.
Club President Jeff Body says the last time the championships were held at Thirroul was 1990.
“It’s a huge opportunity for our club, and for the whole region,” says Jeff. “Teams from 65 clubs will compete in five events which simulate rescues.
“We are not only hosting the event, we are confident of being competitive,” he says. “Thirroul took Silver at this year’s Australian IRB titles in Kingscliff.
“This is also a fantastic opportunity to give back to the local community,” says Jeff, “especially the local businesses who are always so generous to us. For example David and the team at IGA have fully funded our new ATV. This is our opportunity to say thank you by driving business back through their door.”
The event has the support of Wollongong Council and Destination Wollongong and will be held at Thirroul Beach from July 13-15 2018.
