There will be no ANZAC March in Thirroul this year.
Austinmer-Thirroul RSL Sub-Branch President Tony Starling says in the old days, each village sub-branch was encouraged to hold their own march on the Sunday before ANZAC Day.
However with the growth of the city of Wollongong, it was decided a few years back to hold a city march, where all the RSL Sub-Branches would come together and march as one past the War Memorial in McCabe Park. However, traditionalists in some branches preferred to have their own local march, as was the case with Thirroul.
“As traffic through the region is chaotic, particularly on weekends, Lawrence Hargrave Drive has been categorised as a Major Regional road and any disruption to traffic really exacerbates that chaos. So it’s been decided by my sub-branch, in conjunction with discussions with the Traffic Police, that we should cancel the march. We considered there was no point in having a service when we also held Dawn Services on ANZAC Day at both Thirroul and Austinmer.
Dawn Services will be held at William Woodward Park Thirroul and another at Austinmer Beach, both starting at 5.45am on ANZAC Day, Monday April 25.
Breakfast will be served afterwards at Thirroul Bowling Club.
