Concerned locals have until August 14 to contact the RMS regarding the closure of Bulli Pass from October until December.
However Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward is standing firm on the closure, saying he’ll cop the flack because it’s not as great as the trouble he’d be in if someone was to be killed by a falling rock.
“My first priority is to ensure Mums and Dads make it home each night,” he says. “That means drivers as well as the workers at the site. It will be a nightmare and an inconvenience, and I apologise. But I am being hard-nosed on this one.
“I appreciate it’s frustrating but the risk of a landslip is high.
“This work is about preventing the loss of life. And the way it’s being done will mean the workers are safe too. The construction of boulder fencing involves complex geotechnical work with engineers in precarious positions. Scaffolding will need to be erected and this can’t be taken down easily.
“Having said that, I urge people to speak up with positive suggestions to make this process as painless as possible. The RMS will be working to complete the job as quickly as possible, and it could possibly be done more quickly, which we certainly hope is the case.”
