It’s been the best of times and the worst of time for Scarborough Boardriders Club, which celebrates it’s 33rd Annual Presentation day at Thirroul’s Beaches Hotel this weekend.
The club has celebrated their greatest victory, but also suffered the loss of young member Reuben Martin.
Reuben was a member of Scarborough Boardriders for several years and was named Under 18 Champion in 2015. He was, tragically, killed in a car accident earlier this year.
In his honour, the club has re-named the U18’s perpetual trophy the Reuben Martin Sheild.
“Reuben’s death has been horrific for the club,” says president Christian De Clouett. “It’s been a tough time for a lot of local families. He was a great young surfer and we feel this is a great way to honour his life and his memory.
“From now on, the club’s best U18 surfer will take home the shield that bears his name.”
Christian, who has been club president for 10 years, says 2017 has been a remarkable season in terms of results.
Scarborough took top spot at the Southern Region qualifiers for the Australian Boardriders Challenge, securing a place at the National Finals in Newcastle in February 2018, and earning the title of ‘Number One Boardriders Club from Sydney Harbour to the Victorian Border’.
“Kalani Ball is a member of our club,” he says. ” He hasn’t been able to compete for us much this year as he’s on the WSL Qualifying circuit, where he’s currently ranked just outside the top 50 surfers in the world! But he will be back in time for the Australian Boardriders finals in February so we are entering a strong contingent.
“Over the past few years we have put a lot into the development of our younger surfers and we are seeing some real results,” he says. “And these great results are breeding a more positive and confident culture within the club. The kids are really starting to believe in themselves.
“Nic Squires has been instrumental in our success. He coaches a lot of our juniors so the surfers coming up through the ranks are ready to compete.”
Scarborough Boardriders now boasts more than 150 members and Christian says the surfers and their families, as well as the club’s sponsors, are all enjoying the success.
Scarborough Boardriders 2017 Presentation will be held at Beaches Hotel on Saturday November 25 from 4pm. Entertainment includes Fat Albert Band and local band Seven Suns.
