Wombarra rock climber Leah Jefferies has climbed her way into the Australian team to compete in the World Championships in Moscow this August.
Fifteen year old Leah was one of 250 athletes from all over Australia to converge on the Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym at Villawood for the National Youth Sport Climbing Championships- coming home with a Silver in the Lead event and Bronze for Speed.
Rock Climbing will be an Olympic sport in Tokyo 2020 and while climbers have traditionally concentrated on one discipline, the Olympic format means they’ll have to excel in all three categories- Lead, Speed and Bouldering- to take home a medal.
‘Lead’ sees climbers attach ropes as they climb. You have to be first to the top to win. ‘Bouldering’ sees climbers set a series of ‘puzzles’ which they have to complete- with no ropes- but they do have mats in case they fall. ‘Speed’, as the name suggests, sees the climbers scamper up the wall to reach the top as quickly as possible.
Leah is an outside chance for 2020 but is hoping to claim a spot in the Australian Olympic team in 2024.
She took part in last year’s World Championships in Austria. You can read more about Leah and her 2017 campaign HERE
