Exciting times for local beer lovers when the Coal Coast Brewing Company launches their maiden brew at Jose Jones tonight.
The new Austinmer based craft beer company has been inspired by the region’s rich and iconic history in mining and maritime, and is proud to introduce its first brew, the PIT PONY PALE ALE.
Company founder Kelly Carey’s family has a long, beer-related history with her grandfather owning his own pub.
“I really love how people come together over food and drink. It’s a great feeling.” And it’s that feeling that’s prompted Kelly to launch her own beer.
She’s combined her love of hospitality with her experience in marketing and events at both Coca Cola and Foxtel to create a beer that pays homage to the Northern Illawarra.
“The beer has been created in honour of the stoic servant and faithful companion of the coal miners of yesteryear,” says Kelly. “Before mechanical mining, pit ponies played a vital role in hauling the heavy skips of coal from the Illawarra’s underground mines up to the surface.
“The sixth sense of these animals saved the life of many a miner. There are stories of ponies who refused to enter a section of mine that subsequently collapsed the next day or even within the hour. They were notorious for being stubborn, tough and yet very faithful friends.”
Kelly says they chose the mining and maritime industries as the inspiration behind the beer brand to celebrate and honour the region’s sometimes forgotten past.
“Living here on the Coal Coast, you can’t help but be mesmerised by the towering escarpment and the raw power of the ocean,” she says. “We really hope to do the region’s rich history justice in every brew we release.”
PIT PONY PALE ALE will be launched in time for the holiday season at Jose Jones Thirroul at 4pm, Friday the 21st of December. You can also buy limited release 2 litre Growlers (take home refillable bottles) from Thirroul Cellars.
